10 a.m. – 1 p.m. & 3 – 6 p.m.

With Odeleya Berlin, Moussa Berlin, Alan Bern (Co-Coordinator), Yair Dalal, Christian Dawid (Co-Coordinator), Guy Schalom, Amit Weisberger
Artists-in-Residence: Tayfun Guttstadt, Mark Kovnatskiy

Following this year's special topic, "The Other Israel: Seeing Unseen Diasporas," the Intermediate and Advanced Instrumental Workshop is proud to welcome to the faculty oud and violin virtuoso Yair Dalal, whose pioneering exploration of his Iraqi Jewish musical heritage helped set the stage for a re-evaluation and revival of all Jewish heritages in Israel with origins in Arabic culture (mizrahi). Joining Yair will be clarinetist Moussa Berlin, for many decades the pre-eminent musician in the Israeli hassidic and klezmer music worlds, as well as a pioneer of the Meron style, a powerful hybrid of Arabic and Jewish musical influences. Together with pianist Odeleya Berlin (Moussa's daughter), clarinetist Christian Dawid, violinist Amit Weisberger, percussionist Guy Schalom and pianist/accordionist Alan Bern, this workshop will be a rich, intercultural exploration of repertoire, rhythm, instrumental techniques, performance style, theory and history. We will work in plenary sessions, ensembles, coaching sessions and lectures. We will also reflect on how these traditions resemble and differ from one another in their musical and social histories both inside and outside of Israel, and how they contribute to issues of Jewish, non-Jewish and Israeli identities.

This workshop is for instrumentalists with intermediate to advanced experience in Yiddish or Middle Eastern music. We will work both by ear and with written music.  If you'd like to discuss whether this workshop is right for you, please contact the workshop's co-coordinator, Christian Dawid: christiandawid@gmail.com

SPECIAL TIP! This year’s Song Workshop, which directly follows the Instrumental Music Workshop,  will be especially interesting for instrumentalists, too, including topics such as accompaniment, vocal/instrumental ornamentation and work in ensembles. Especially relevant for instrumental styles that are closely modeled on vocal styles!
