Hasidic music is without a doubt one of the deepest, most spiritual traditions within the world of Jewish music. Central to hasidic music are nigunim, very special melodies (with or without words) for dancing, meditation and community gatherings that transmit a powerful spiritual purpose. For generations, nigunim have also inspired klezmer music and continue to do so today in the klezmer revival, New Jewish Music and New Yiddish Music scenes. The Jerusalem-based clarinetist Chilik Frank, best known in Europe through his work with the ensemble The Heart and the Wellspring, is one of the most important and beloved musicians in hasidic music today. Together with Gershon Leizerson and Alan Bern, he is offering for the first time in Weimar a very special, 3-day workshop in hasidic music for both instrumentalists and vocalists.

PLEASE NOTE! In this very special workshop we are committed to respecting hasidic religious requirements while staying true to the principles of diversity and inclusion that are fundamental to Yiddish Summer Weimar. For that reason, all participants (both men and women) are asked to wear modest dress that completely covers their arms and legs at all times. You may freely choose the material, style and color(s) of your clothing.

Regarding the structure of the workshop: Alan, Chilik and Gershon will lead two joint sessions every day from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., and 3 to 5 p.m. In between and following these, Gershon Leizerson will lead two additional one-hour practice sessions (12 to 1 and 5 to 6 p.m), in which the focus will be on rehearsing the melodies learned and developing instrumental/vocal technique.
