Dance Workshop Aug 8 – 12 @Tanzwerkstatt
10 a.m. – 1 p.m. & 3 – 6 p.m.

With Medhat Aldabaal, Jill Gellerman, Andreas Schmitges, Judith Brin Ingber
Artist-in-Residence: Sayumi Yoshida

The special topic of this year’s Yiddish Summer Weimar is “The Other Israel: Seeing Unseen Diasporas.” With that in mind, this year’s dance workshop will explore a fascinating question: “Which dance traditions contributed to the creation of Israeli folk dance and – especially relevant for us – what was the role of Yiddish dance?”
This summer we’ll focus on the connections between Hasidic, Arabic, Yiddish and early Israeli folk dances. We’ll explore how these gave rise to a new wave of Israeli folk dance choreography in the 1930s and 1940s.

In this workshop, we’ll learn dances from each tradition, taught by expert dance teachers, including Medhat Aldabaal (Arabic dance), Jill Gellerman (Hasidic dance), Judith Brin Ingber (early Israeli dance traditions) and Andreas Schmitges (Yiddish dance). As always in Yiddish Summer dance workshops, the music will be played by our very special Dance Orchestra, coached by expert musicians in each style. So prepare yourself for an inspiring, intercultural adventure in folk dance and an incredible final dance ball!

Workshop fee: Standard 345 € / Reduced 270 € / Supporter 470 € / Under 18: 180 €
