We all know it means to say that we are “standing on the shoulders of giants” – extraordinary figures of the past who laid the groundwork for the technology, art and culture of today. One such giant was Ruth Rubin. Rubin (1906 - 2000) was a Canadian singer and ethnographer who collected and recorded approximately 1500 Yiddish songs from a large number of informants from Eastern Europe, creating a treasure trove of musical styles and Yiddish dialects, and documenting previously unknown repertoire. Last year, the National Library of Israel put all of Rubin’s available field recordings in their collection online. We would like to use this as an opportunity to celebrate and honor this remarkable singer and lover of Yiddish music and culture. Join us in welcoming a lineup of great artists from Europe, the USA and Israel, who will present traditional and contemporary versions of pieces from Rubin’s collection.
