In 1949-50, “Operation Flying Carpet” brought close to 50,000 Yemeni Jews to the newly founded state of Israel, where the vast majority of the world’s Yemenite Jewish community still lives today.

As part of their rich cultural heritage, the Yemeni Jews brought an extensive rich tradition of music and dance to Israel – a tradition that continues to influence the local music scene even today. Ensemble Gulaza has devoted itself to a unique and exciting repertoire: the songs of Yemeni women, which have been passed down from mother to daughter through the generations. In the ensemble’s arrangements, these evocative songs and texts (which singer Igal Mizrahi learned from his family as a child) come to life in a particularly relevant and modern way. The combination of string instruments from the Sahara, cello, guitar and percussion, and male voice (Mizrahi is the first male singer ever to sing these songs) creates a unique and fascinating sound that has earned the group praise the world over. We are proud to present Gulaza as the opening event of the festival week!

Line up:
Igal Mizrahi (IL) - voice, percussion
Ben Aylon (IL) - percussion, djeli n’goni
Yair Hashachar (IL) - guitars
